Mothers, especially those who work outside the home, are often so busy taking care of everything and everyone else, we don’t look after ourselves properly. Some days it seems we don’t have a moment of peace just to collect our thoughts. It is essential for the Mommy Leader to give herself some time everyday that is dedicated to her only.
The beauty and peacefulness of this scene represents what I wish for Mommy Leaders to experience through the 8 Essential R’s.
The 8 Essential R’s
1. REST
Probably the number 1 complaint. I don’t get enough rest! Yet we regularly forfeit that all important rest to do more for the kids, in the house, or at work. At some point, your body will demand it. Get some rest before that happens. Taking better care of yourself helps you care better for others. I’m still working on that!
2. RELEASE
Release yourself (temporarily) from all the responsibility that you carry. Although you are an extraordinary woman, you are not superwoman. Delegating is not only a leadership skill, it is a survival technique! Allow someone else to help you. And remember this…if you don’t get everything done today, the sun will still rise the next morning.
3. REFLECT
Play back the events of the day as if you were an outside observer. What went well? What didn’t? Try not to defend or justify your actions…just adjust them as appropriate. Tomorrow is another day.
4. RELISH
Relish means to be pleased by or to appreciate. Relish the positives in your life and each of your successes no matter how small or seemingly insignificant. Be thankful for small miracles. Thankfulness seems to relieve stress.
5. REPLENISH
When you replenish something, you refill it or build it up again. I don’t know about you, but at the end of every day, I am not only tired but I am usually drained. Rest certainly replenishes me physically, however I need emotional and spiritual replenishment as well. I get mine through music, a Bible scripture, or a good hug from my kids. Build yourself up so you can face it all again tomorrow.
6. REFOCUS
It is easy to lose focus on what is important with the variety of hats we wear. Think about your priorities and goals and why you do what you do. It just may help you make better use of you oh so limited time.
7. RESOLVE
Make up in your mind that you can and will do what it takes to accomplish what you set out to do…after you’ve gotten some rest, that is.
8. REPEAT
…all of the above as everyday (or as often as you can)!
This is your official reminder to take a few moments for yourself.
