Profile  of  a  Mommy  Leader

What is a Mommy Leader?

Being a Mommy Leader is so much more than successfully juggling family, career, and many other responsibilities all at once.  A Mommy Leader is a mother who recognizes her own skills – even the ones she uses as a mother – and is savvy enough to adapt those skills to a professional environment.  She knows that her motherhood experience is valuable not just at home but anywhere she has influence and provides direction to others.  She is also smart enough to know when to co-lead and when to follow.  There are women who personify this description and in the coming weeks we will feature some of those women on this site.  They were the inspiration for my new book and we can all learn from them….The Mommy Leader.

What leadership skills do you use as a mother?

The  Need  for  Great  Leaders

The need for great leaders cannot be overstated.  There are millions of bosses, supervisors, managers, CEOs, presidents, and directors in this world, but how many are really leaders? And, of those who are real leaders, how many are great leaders? Exceptional leadership is transformative.  Under the guidance of a great leader, a team of ordinary individuals can achieve extraordinary results.  Similarly, mothers perform a critical leadership role that can be equally transformative.  Raising children successfully sometimes seems to require the strategy and skill of a Fortune 100 CEO.

Because of the importance of leadership and what can be accomplished through it, all leaders should strive to improve and become more effective. Your team’s performance greatly depends on it.  Don’t you want to offer your team the best direction you can provide?

No matter what the field, great leadership is sorely needed.  Furthermore, leadership talent is not only needed at the top, but at all levels.  That’s a lot of leaders.  —-

It’s in you!

As I research leadership topics, I often come across leadership quotes.  I like to try a little trick.  I check to see if that same quote could be applied to motherhood.  Example: Quote by Jack Welch, famous former CEO of GE and noted leadership guru…

BEFORE YOU ARE A LEADER, SUCCESS IS ALL ABOUT GROWING YOURSELF.

WHEN YOU BECOME A LEADER, SUCCESS IS ALL ABOUT GROWING OTHERS.

Try the same quote, but put the word MOTHER in wherever you see the word LEADER.  I invite you to try this with other leadership quotes. If you come up with any good ones, please share.

The point to all of this: Motherhood is a leadership role. It takes planning, strategy, courage, perseverance, knowledge, vision, and the list goes on!
